haha! Thanks Jim... Yes, there were many awkward moments when I first started teaching ESL. The dreaded, "Why?" OMG... English is so confusing when it comes to rules and reasons why. I resorted to honesty: "I don't know why! Sorry." But then I went home or to the library and looked it up. The truth is, as native English learners we don't learn grammar through books and exercises - we learn it through speech and reading, by osmosis. Unfortunately, someone coming in later in the game doesn't have the time for that osmosis. They have to go to school, or get a job and use an unfamiliar language, so they need to learn the grammar rules in a very unnatural way - through books and exercises. :-( That's why I ALWAYS stress that my students read. I truly believe it's the best way to learn the grammar of a language, as well as vocabulary.

Hi Dewi, that is not a real sentence. You could maybe hear someone saying things that don't sound like real sentences because when we speak we don't follow the same grammar rules. It's more flexible.

Hello Djahida, thanks for your compliments on my blog! I am glad that it helps you. I will be adding more ESL topics soon, so please come back again. In the meantime, I recommend you practice writing great sentences - see this post: http://www.learning2grow.org/types-of-sentence-fragments/ This is the best information that I have on how to improve your writing.

For essays, I would recommend that you read essays as much as possible. The best way to improve your grammar and writing is by READING! Do you read every day? I recommend you read every day--fiction and non-fiction books, not the newspaper. If you have trouble reading adult books, you can read books for teenagers.
